Information Organization Project

Spring 2020

The Information Organization Project, which was done over the Spring semester of 2020 fulfill the third ALA competency in multiple ways, creating a database from scratch, teaching processes related to cataloging, providing experience with organizing databases. The first and most obvious way is by providing me with experience in creating a database from scratch, most notably practice in identifying information that matches users search desires, which shows skills related to 3B, the skills needed to organize recorded knowledge and information resources. The second way is it taught processes related to databases including but not restricted to cataloging, classification, and metadata. Experience with metadata comes from identifying the metadata elements related to user’s search desires, experience with classification and cataloging comes from the creation of records of items in the collections. The last way is by providing experience organizing a database, namely the importance of metadata elements and classification schemes in collocating like items, which provides experience with 3A, the principles in organizing and representing recorded knowledge and information.

Metadata Records Project

July-August 2021

The Metadata Records project, which was done during the Summer semester of 2021 fulfill the third ALA competency in multiple ways, teaching processes related to cataloging, and creating xml metadata records from scratch. The Metadata Records project had us create xml records of both a text document and a painting with DCCAP, VRA, and DCQualified for the purpose of creating a record of eight items with my 3 other group members. The professor gave us templates for the various schemes so the main part of the assignment wasn’t writing the record from scratch but rather remembering what information goes in what elements and what the correct way to input the data into the element was. Creating xml metadata records provided experience in the layout of records in various different metadata schema, which fulfills 3C, the systems of cataloging, metadata, indexing, and classification standards used to organize recorded knowledge and information.
