INFO 5210

Research Paper

March 28th, 2021

The INFO 5210 Research Paper, which was done on March 28th, 2021 fulfills the seventh ALA competency in one major way the topic of the paper I researched covered the importance of libraries in providing access to texts in native languages and the continuing need for expanding the texts able to be held in our catalogs. The first way is by showing that libraries are an important source for collecting and cataloging texts that are written in indigenous languages since their scarcity means that for-profit entities are not willing to try and catalog them fulfilling 7B, The role of the library in the lifelong learning of patrons, including an understanding of lifelong learning in the provision of quality service and the use of lifelong learning in the promotion of library services. The second way is through showing how the work needed to catalog these works is still undergoing and since for-profit entities are unwilling to catalog them it must then fall to Library Science professionals to catalog them fulfilling 7A, The necessity of continuing professional development of practitioners in libraries and other information agencies.

Metadata Research Presentation

July 2021

The INFO 5223 Presentation, which was done in July of 2021, fulfills the seventh ALA competency in one major way by providing experience with teaching others about a library science concept. The final part of the Metadata Research presentation was the actual presentation where I had to teach the entire class what exactly Technical Metadata was. I tried to stick to simple phrases in the powerpoint that would serve to remind me of the important information rather than write out everything in the presentation itself. I also tried to keep the presentation somewhat brief, using only 9 slides, and cover examples, so the audience could better see how it is used in practice, what it is, and what some of the drawbacks of it are. This fulfills 7D, The principles related to the teaching and learning of concepts, processes and skills used in seeking, evaluating, and using recorded knowledge and information.
