ALA Competency 4: Technological Knowledge & Skills

INFO 5200

Information Organization Project

Spring 2020

The IOP, which was done over the Spring semester of 2020 fulfill the fourth ALA competency in several major ways. The IOP had us build an entire database from scratch based off of a collection that we came up with and a fictional user group. The biggest part of the IOP was determining what the schema we would be use would look like, since my collection was over tabletop roleplaying game I decided to organize it by system, genre, and dice requirement. We were also required to come up with not just the database that we would create but also what our ideal database would look like and explain exactly what caused us to make the choices we did. The process of creating a database for the IOP provided hands on experience in what qualities are desirable in a database. The IOP assignment also provide experience with 4C, the methods of assessing and evaluating the specifications, efficacy, and cost efficiency of technology-based products and services, by providing experience with what qualities are desirable in a database.

The INFO 5814 Assignment, which was done over the Fall semester of 2020, fulfill the fourth ALA competency in several major ways. The INFO 5814 Assignment had us create a website using both HTML, CSS, and a template. The assignment had us start out working with the simplest aspects of HTML, creating links, having pictures show up, and working with the font of the pages. The assignment overall was very helpful since I had no experience with computers before the class and this assignment allowed for me to learn just enough to work with HTML and CSS. INFO 5814 Assignment provided experience with creating web pages in HTML and CSS providing experience with 4A, Information, communication, assistive, and related technologies as they affect resources, service delivery, and uses of libraries and other information agencies, along with experience with 4B, the application of information, communication, assistive, and related technologies and tools consistent with professional ethics and prevailing service norms and applications
