ALA Competency 6: Research

    INFO 5000

    Term Paper

    Fall 2020

The INFO 5000 Term Paper, which was done during the Fall semester of 2020 fulfills the sixth ALA competency in one major way, providing experience with researching a topic. Firstly, the term paper provides skill related to 6A, the fundamentals of quantitative and qualitative research methods, the term paper required 10 sources at least 8 of which had to be from peer-reviewed sources challenging me to find my own sources for the paper and providing me with experience in interpreting sources. The other major way is by providing me with the opportunity to evaluate what sources will be useful for the paper because, the Term Paper being a research paper required me to not only do my own research but also to recognize whether or not a source would be useful for the paper, providing experience with 6C, the principle and methods used to assess the actual and potential value of new research.

    Research Presentation

    July 2021

The INFO 5223 Presentation, which was done during July of 2021, fulfills the sixth ALA competency in one major way, providing experience with researching a topic. For the Metadata research presentation, we needed to independently research a specific type of metadata in order to explain exactly what it was, how it was used, and why you would use it in the first place. Finding sources was actually a little difficult since we needed them to be actual professional sources and most of the sites carrying information about metadata types were more along the lines of Wikipedia rather than anything that could be used. The presentation also provides experience with researching a topic specifically seeking out technical information on a type of metadata. This fulfills 6A, the fundamentals of quantitative and qualitative research methods, and 6C, the principle and methods used to assess the actual and potential value of new research.
